Swedish family: concept, nuances and traditions

The Swedes are great family men. For them, family is their fortress and stronghold. For them, their home is the best place on earth. They carefully arrange their home, making it cozy and stylish.

They constantly repair, improve, buy new elegant tablecloths or beautiful furniture. The Swedes love to spend time at home and love to visit. Therefore, instead of going to a bar or restaurant, they go to someone’s home.

Swedish citizens get married very late, closer to 35 years old. Firstly, they are very freedom-loving and do not want to depend on anyone. Secondly, they study for a long time and work hard to achieve financial independence. And the third, main reason is that civil marriages are common in Sweden. Lovers live together for many years, but are in no hurry to register, even when children are born.

INTERESTING FACT! We have all heard such a concept as a “Swedish family”, but the Swedes have no idea what they have to do with it. Despite popular belief, it is not customary to live in threes in Sweden; ordinary marriages between a man and a woman are more common here.

There is equality in families. Both the husband and the wife have equal responsibilities in everyday life. It is not considered strange here if the husband sits at home with the child and cooks dinner while his wife works at work or assembles furniture.

Children are another big weakness in Swedish families. Little ones are real kings here, and adults adore them. That is why, despite modern European traditions, Sweden still has many children. Families with 3-4 children are absolutely normal here.

They never punish children. Shouting, swearing or spanking are simply unthinkable here. Sweden became the first country in the world to prohibit the use of physical force against children by law.

It is not customary here to categorically tell a child how he should behave in society. It is believed that the child will figure everything out on his own over time, and adults can only give him hints and gently guide him in the right direction.

The Swedish government also cares about young citizens. When a child turns 4 months old, he receives a gift in the mail – the first toothbrush with toothpaste, as well as a brochure for parents, which describes how to care for children’s teeth.
