Christmas is traditionally celebrated at home with the family at a large festive table. It must include Christmas dishes:
Julskinka or Christmas ham. It has been present on the festive table since the Middle Ages. The pork ham is boiled briefly and then baked in the oven with mustard.
Rice porridge and lucky almonds. Only one nut is put in the dish. It is believed that the one who gets a piece of almond will be happy all year. In the past, it was believed that almonds promise a quick marriage. This tradition came to Sweden from Denmark.
All kinds of herring appetizers. Fish with various spices and vegetables (onions, garlic, curry, beets) is served with crispy bread and potatoes.
Gingerbread house. A mandatory attribute of the Swedish festive table. They are sold in any store, but the Swedes themselves prefer to bake the house themselves in the family circle. And the store-bought gingerbread houses are being taken apart by tourists.
Glögg. A traditional Christmas drink in Sweden. It is a warm wine with ginger and cinnamon, very similar to mulled wine. It is usually served with raisins and almonds.
There are also many snacks on the table – cheese, sauerkraut, pates, buns with saffron and much more.
