How they eat in Sweden and the peculiarities of food culture

The most favorite day for many is Saturday or Lördagsgodis (day for sweets). In the 40-50s, Swedish doctors found out that sweet candies cause tooth decay, but if you eat them once a week, there will be no particular harm to your teeth.

And they recommended that citizens limit their consumption of sweets. Obedient citizens did not dare to disobey the recommendation, and many stores began to sell sweets exclusively on Saturdays.

Over time, sales were no longer limited, but Swedes still indulge themselves in sweets only on Saturdays. On this day, there are so many people in the pastry shops and sweets departments that it is impossible to push through. According to estimates, stores sell 1.8 kilograms of sweets per customer on Saturday.

On other days, Swedes prefer to eat simply and monotonously. Each family has its own tried and tested dishes that they cook constantly. Here, they can easily eat the same thing every day. Despite such monotony, both men and women love to cook. For them, it is not a duty, but a pleasure.

They do a lot of the preparations themselves – they try to get out into the forest to pick berries and mushrooms. Most Swedes like to do gardening. Even in big cities, they rent plots of land where they grow vegetables and greens. They bake bread and bakery products themselves.

At the table in Sweden, it is customary to serve yourself food – exactly as much as you want to eat. You should not take extra, practical Swedes do not like it when uneaten food remains on the plate, it is impolite.

Swedes try to cook exactly as much food as they will eat at one time. If they suddenly made a mistake and cooked more, then they do not throw away the leftovers, but freeze them. Reheating the day before yesterday’s dinner for lunch is not a way to save money, but a rational attitude to food.

When going to visit, Swedes will always bring food with them. It is not customary to drink at the table until the host makes the first toast. Then you can drink whenever you want.
