Vadstena castle (Vadstena Municipality, Östergötland)

Vadstena Castle is located on Lake Vättern. This landmark of Sweden was built in the 15th century. In the Middle Ages, this castle was the residence of the royal family. Historically, it is noteworthy that it was here that Queen Margaret I lived.

Historical background. Margaret I (1353-1412) was the queen of Denmark, Sweden and Norway, the founder of the Kalmar Union, which united the three Scandinavian countries under one crown. Margaret I is known for her political wisdom, diplomatic skills and ability to retain power in the face of frequent conflicts.

Vadstena Castle was also one of the centers of religious life, and it houses a collection of medieval artifacts and works of art, as well as historical documents. Also, at different stages of history, the building served as a shelter for the sick, a military fortress and a place of negotiations.
